In our mission to build and unite the movement of farm animal protection and promoting a more humane, sustainable food system, Asia for Animals’ Farm Animal Coalition (FAC) collaborated with Sintesia Animalia International to host the 5th FAC Regional Event Indonesia. The event, took place in Sanur, Denparsa, Bali on July 17, 2025 brought together nearly 70 attendees from different sectors, including government representatives, animal welfare organizations, plant-based advocates and academics.

Key Takeaways
“Although crucial, farm animal welfare is often overlooked or avoided as a topic of discussion. Livestock is a key sector in Indonesia, and ensuring animal welfare is our responsibility as citizens, as mandated by law.
This meeting serves as a reminder to all of us of that obligation.” said Jovand Calvary, Chairperson of Sintesia Animalia Indonesia.
With a theme of “Collaborating with the Government to Establish a National Farm Animal Welfare Advisory Committee” the event was held in the form of a ‘focus group discussion’ (FGD), where participants discussed the need to build an effective farm animal welfare movement using a collaborative, decolonized, and One Health and Welfare-based approach. The discussion also sought to use this framework to engage with the government in the formation of a Farm Animal Welfare Advisory Committee, while simultaneously seeking principled support from the government for this initiative.
“We believe that this Committee can assist the Government in developing strategies and frameworks for animal welfare, ensuring that solutions are measurable, grounded in real field conditions, and scientifically accountable,” explained Dr. Sasa Vernandes,
Chief Veterinary Officer of Sintesia Animalia Indonesia.
Next steps
The idea of forming a National Farm Animal Welfare Advisory Committee was supported by animal protection groups that attended the event.
“We are inviting all of them to help build a collaborative, decolonized, and One Health and Welfare-based animal welfare movement. We understand that this initiative may be met with both support and criticism, and all feedback will be taken into careful consideration,” Jovand Calvary emphasized.
Sintesia Animalia International is going to communicate with participants of the FGD to begin collaborating to advocate the Government for such a National Farm Animal Welfare Advisory Committee.
With the establishment of this committee, stakeholders hope Indonesia can elevate its standards of animal welfare—benefiting not only the animals themselves but also enhancing the country’s global image, particularly in internationally renowned tourist destinations like Bali and our team at FAC will continue to support our local partners on their journey.
